The Republicans exploit an urban myth each election cycle that they are better for jobs and the economy than Democrats. This political cartoon by Greenberg shows the actual results of each President’s effect on the economy.

Republicans run on the premise that they will lower taxes and create more jobs. Not very many people remember that while Reagan brought about the largest tax cuts in history, he also presided over the largest tax increase in history.

Reagan ran up the biggest deficits ever seen. To his credit, his defense spending helped bankrupt the Soviet Union (along with their ill-advised war in Afghanistan). But putting aside the international consequences, the country was put in a precarious position with Reagan’s “borrow and spend” budget deficits.

George H.W. Bush continued Reagan’s deficit spending and, coupled with a recession, introduced even higher budget deficits. Bush was forced to raise taxes, thus breaking his “read my lips, no new taxes” pledge.

The “tax-and-spend liberal”, Bill Clinton, got the deficit under control, and created a budget surplus. George W. Bush has been a disaster, with the bailout of his economic failures costing us over a trillion dollars, along with his Iraq war, which will likely run another 1.5 trillion dollars, if we are lucky. We now have the most severe recession since the 1930’s with millions losing their jobs and homes.

George W. Bush said that Wall Street acted like it was drunk. What an apt description for his whole administration. That is the reason that John McCain’s promise of jobs and prosperity are nothing more than a feeble punch line, as depicted below:

While John McCain is claiming that Barack Obama is a light-weight celebrity because he performed well on the World stage, meeting with the heads of state of both Europe and the Middle East, John McCain’s, IMDB page, where nothing but celebrity status is measured, is huge!

While we know that the Republicans love Hollywood, and Hollywood loves Washington, very few politicians can measure up to this degree of activity in Tinsel Town. I can only think of Ronald Reagan, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as having longer celebrity resumes.

Barack Obama represented our country well when he went overseas. There were no gaffes, no neck massages of foreign leaders, no vomiting on other dignitaries, no wrong or mis-pronounced names, and no leaving a summit, saying, “Goodbye, from the greatest polluter in the world”.

However, John McCain’s campaign does not offer any respect for that performance, instead labeling him as being of the same ilk as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. John McCain sees a successful overseas tour by Obama, and mocks and scoffs, reducing the take-home message to, “So what, big deal. He’s just a celebrity”.

This week also saw John McCain take one simple recommendation by Barack Obama about inflating tires properly to save gas, and called tire gauges the centerpiece of Barack Obama’s energy policy. Mock, mock. Scoff, scoff.

Perhaps the myopia of the McCain campaign speaks to the short-sightedness of McCain in regard to almost any issue, none so ridiculous as the gasoline tax proposal and the mantra invented by New Gingrich, “Drill Here, Drill Now”.

McCain later admitted that inflating tires properly is a good idea. He still has not explained how a temporary suspension of the gasoline tax, which would at most save a family $28.00, or how drilling here and drilling now is going to produce any results before 2018. Mock, mock, mock. Scoff, scoff, scoff.

However, you can judge for yourself as to who is the biggest celebrity.

Watch the video below, and then take a look at the small “snippet” of appearances on TV and film for John McCain in just the last few years in the IMDb listing. This small sampling does not begin to cover the list of celebrity entries on IMDB.

The video is from GottaLaff. Enjoy:

ad nauseam adv. To a disgusting or ridiculous degree; to the point of nausea. [Latin ad , to + nauseam , accusative of nausea]

I have decided to venture into the primordial ooze that is the right wing swamp, inspired in part by Stephanie Miller, whose talk radio show plays clips each morning from various right-wing pundits in a segment she calls “Right Wing World”.

As much as it is a cringe-inducing experience, unless you at least wade in the right-wing morass, you really do not have the ability to understand how these people pair two unrelated facts or events, and then draw a conclusion that ranges from absurd to bizarre.

So, here is the first installment of Right Wing Ad Nauseum, and who better to put together unrelated events and issue a non-sequitur than Ann Coulter:

Since a Chinese graduate student at Columbia University, Minghui Yu, was killed last Friday when black youths violently set upon him, sending him running into traffic to escape, I think B. Hussein Obama ought to start referring to the mind-set of the “typical Asian person.”

As of Wednesday, police had no motive for the attack, and witnesses said they heard no demand for money or anything else. The Associated Press reports that the assailant simply said to his friend, “Watch what I do to this guy” before punching Yu.
